The 85-year old schooner Suva was designed by yacht designer Ted Geary for his client Robert Pratt (of Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Engines). She was built in China in 1925 almost entirely of old-growth teak. Originally a gaff-rigged schooner, she now sails with a staysail schooner rig.
More recently, the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op recaulked the entire hull, replaced the bowsprit and boomkin (using Purpleheart), rebuilt the mainmast and foremast (using Sitka Spruce), and replaced the standing rigging.
Suva is 68 feet overall and has a 14 foot beam. She is specifically designed for the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia with her classic pilothouse, all teak interior, and cozy diesel heat. These features make her perfect for year-round sailing.
